What is the maximum annuity I can earn under CSRS?
Generally, the maximum benefit is 80 percent of your high-3 salary, which under the CSRS standard formula is reached with 41 years and 11 months of service. However, you might reach that limit with less service if you had employment, such as working for Congress, for which the benefit accrual rate is higher.

The value of unused sick leave doesn’t count toward the 80 percent limit, nor does the value of a voluntary contributions annuity, if pertinent.

Those whose benefits would exceed the limit are offered a choice of having the remaining amount refunded with interest or using it to purchase additional annuity, which won’t be subject to the 80 percent limit. The value is the same as an additional annuity purchased through a voluntary contributions account.
